November 2003 NEWSLETTER

We had yet another fine day for our trip to Staunton Harold and Calke Abbey (it was never an Abbey, apparently, but a Priory).  27 attended. This was a good event for the more energetic - nearly half the party going cross-country from Staunton Harold after morning coffee and a look round the craft centre and garden centre, others taking in the extensive grounds at Calke Abbey.  For the less energetic, there were still quite a number of stairs within Calke Abbey and a trek through the rather forbidding tunnel which nowadays is one of the exits but in days gone by prevented the family seeing the servants coming and going.  Gordon as usual ensured that we all knew what was happening at what time and provided us with the appropriate tickets.  Thanks Gordon.

There are a couple of places available at the gourmet lunch on 14th November so if you wish to sample the food at Love's Restaurant, please ring Iain Hewitt as soon as possible on 01295-670316 and he might be able to squeeze you in.  For those wanting to travel further afield, a party of intrepid explorers will be checking the Christmas markets in Brussels at the beginning of December using the new Eurostar link through Kent.

I have included the Diary of Events for 2004 which may also be accessed by clicking on the link at the head of this Newsletter.  Please note that we still have some details to finalise but I will keep the list updated and also note changes in the body of the Newsletter.

Please contact Gordon Jones at  or telephone 01455-556192, for all membership changes such as address, telephone number, e-mail address.

Skittles at the Butchers Arms, 22nd January 2004  (organiser - Brian Wilson 01926-777710)

If you need to work off some of the festive cheer, how about knocking some skittles down at the Butchers Arms in Mickleton.  We went there some years ago and everybody enjoyed themselves so we thought we would do it again.

Arrive at 7.00 pm and get drinks from the bar.  We will then be served a buffet meal at 7:30 and knock the skittles down after that.  Charge is £2.50 per member and first guest and there will be prizes for the most successful team.  We have had to set a limit of 24 as it gets rather crowded otherwise.

2004 Overseas Coach Tour to Ireland 22-26 April 2004 (organiser - John Smith 01384-860882)

It may seem strange with Christmas approaching to be telling you about this trip but there is a very good reason. Because of the location, we will be going earlier in the year i.e. April. This means that we need to make the bookings and pay deposits much earlier. This early warning is to try to avoid getting the information lost in the festive season.

Location: Waterford, Killarney and Dublin, Republic of Ireland.

Dates: Thursday 22/4/04 - Monday 26/04/04    Price: Member/First Guest £190 Second Guest £255

Provisional Itinerary:

Thursday 22nd - 8:00am departure from IBM Warwick to Fishguard for ferry crossing to Waterford. Overnight stay at Dooleys Hotel for dinner, bed and Breakfast

Friday 23rd - Visit to Waterford Crystal then continue to Blarney for lunch. There will be time to kiss the Blarney Stone. ( I thought all IBMers had done this already). Continue to Killarney, where we stay for 2 nights (DBB)at the Killarney Towers Hotel.

Saturday 24th - A tour of the famous Ring of Kerry returning late afternoon. There are many bars and pubs providing typical irish music after dinner.

Sunday 25th - Travel to Dublin arriving in the afternoon then on to Killorgan Park Hotel for 1 night DBB.

Monday 26th - Morning free in Dublin before leaving at 2:00pm to catch the High Speed Ferry to Holyhead. We will arrive at IBM Warwick approx. 11:00 pm.

I am asking for deposits of £25 per head to confirm interest.  Request for final amount will be made early in the NewYear.

The Retirees Club Constitution  (Brian Wilson)

Some of you may not be aware that the Club has a constitution.  This document has always been available but your Committee felt that it should have wider circulation as it could help answer some of the questions that members have.  Please review the document and if you have any comments, contact any Committee member.

A link has been added at the head of the Newsletter to act as a reference.  Those members who receive the Newsletter by post should call Carole Robertson on 0121 704 9677 and she will print you a copy.
