Editorial

The Normandy trip was a great success after John had sorted out one or two pre-trip problems.  The ferry back home was reluctant to run on all engines which made the coach late back at Warwick but nobody minded too much.  Thanks to John for a most enjoyable trip.

Members may be interested to know that the Retirees Club is not isolated from  the rest of IBM.  We are administered from IBM Greenock by the "IBM UK Retiree Administrator" who organises payments to the Retirees Club bank account (normally twice per year) and provides membership information to our Membership Secretary (Gordon Jones).  The Retiree Administrator's role is purely confined to Club matters, although they do occasionally provide information on other things, one such appearing later in this Newsletter.  We retirees are also of course members of the IBM Warwick Club, although it would be interesting to know how many retirees take part in their events.

                         --------------------------------------------

There is always something of interest at the meetings of the PC group but I feel a mention should be made of the presentation at short notice by Alan Carpenter at the meeting of 26th September.  Very professional, very informative and the round of applause at the end was well deserved.  Thank you Alan.

Christmas Markets in Brussels via Eurostar (organiser John Smith)

Members have requested that we organise this event. We have requested 20 places but will not know the actual number available until the date that we book. To reserve your place please send your booking form with a cheque for the full amount. Places will be allocated in the sequence of receipt of your letters. Successful applications will be confirmed when the actual number of places is known. Any bookings over the actual number available will be placed on a wait list. When the event is closed, cheques will be returned to anyone whose application was unsuccessful.  Please enclose SSAE with your booking form.

N.B. The times listed are only an idea of the timetable. We will provide the accurate times when the holiday has been booked. Also note that this weekend will involve you in carrying your luggage twice. There will be taxis available (not included in the price).  Tickets will be booked from Birmingham but will be valid from any Chiltern Line station and will include tube connection to Waterloo.

Provisional timetable.

Friday 5th December 2003

Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday

There is nothing organised officially. You are free to see the sights of Brussels, visit the Christmas Markets near Grande Place, travel to Brugges ( there are trains every 30 mins, senior citizens get a fare reduction), eat the chocolates, drink the beer or whatever takes your fancy

Monday 8th December 2003

You have free time until we join the Eurostar at 16:00 local time, for the return journey. We arrive in London at 18:00, transfer by Taxi/Tube to connect with Chiltern Trains back to Warwick.

Parking

You may choose to either

  1. Drop your passengers and luggage at the station, park at IBM Warwick and walk to station (approx. 15min)
  2. Park in secure car park at the station (cost not included).   Chiltern have an arrangement whereby you can park for free if there are three or more people in the car and the booking office informed us that this applies for however many days you are parking.

New Year in Guernsey (organiser - Brian Wilson)

Would those members joining this trip please complete the final booking form with their travel details and return the form with a cheque by 6th November.  I will then pass the travel information to the hotel so that they will know when people are coming to and going from the hotel and also that you will be met with a car at the airport.

 Future Events

Your Committee are in the process of finalising the events for 2004 and we hope that you will enjoy the mix that we have come up with.  If your suggestion isn't in this year, it is probably because we can only run so many events over the year - we do keep a note of all suggestions, so it may be that your suggestion can be included in the future.

One area that we have looked at with a view to doing something different is our overseas trips. These are always popular and are normally run in September.  However, we thought some variations on this might be popular.  The New Year in Guernsey has attracted quite a few members and you will see that John Smith is  running a trip to the Christmas markets in Brussels.  Maybe future ideas could include a short trip to the US, say Boston or New York?

John Dawkins

John died suddenly while on holiday in Rome last month. For many years John was a member of Ian Nussey's Special Projects group in Warwick and had recently retired to pursue his many other activities. His friends will remember him as an enthusiastic, if not always organised, member of many groups, chief among his interests being music and his association with the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra. John was a devout Christian.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to Rita and his family.

Barry Wiggins
