April 2004 Newsletter

Editorial

First of all, on a personal note, a big 'Thank You' to all those who sent good wishes and cards to me when I was in Warwick Hospital.  It was very much appreciated.  Margaret would also like to add her thanks to the many people who phoned to enquire about my progress.  I'm pleased to say that I am making steady progress and hope to be out and about in the not too distant future.  Thank you again.

                          --------------------------------------------

The Chinese Banquet at the Emperor's Restaurant in Leamington was a great success.  There was much good food and white wine.

33 attended the Annual General Meeting.  Apart from the formal business there was some lively discussion.  You can access by clicking the field at the the head of the Newsletter; please note that this does not include the Officers' reports; for those members who do not have internet, Carole Robertson willl be happy to supply a hard copy.  There are also changes to the Committee - I will put the full list in the May Newsletter

                          --------------------------------------------

Our visit to Ireland takes place this month and the itinerary should guarantee a successful trip.  Hope the weather keeps fine!

This month you will find information and booking form for the Upton Jazz Festival on Saturday 26th June.  Same format as last year - if you are a jazz fan this is not to be missed.  As in previous years, there is the option of lunch at the White Lion which is a good opportunity for a natter before settling down to listen to the music.

You will also see information and booking form for the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park on 22nd July.  Whilst we have to pay for entry to the Flower Show, remember that Tatton Park is a National Trust property and you can of course use your NT card as normal for the house and gardens.

Don't forget the Summer Lunch.  We think the new venue will prove to be very popular - send your booking form to Carole Robertson if you have not already done so.

Upton Jazz Festival - Saturday 26th June (organiser Brian Chilver - 01386 443173)

Whatever your taste in jazz, you are likely to find what you are looking for at the Oliver Cromwell Jazz Festival on the banks of the River Severn at Upton between Worcester and Tewkesbury.  From Trad to Modern, Dixieland to Big Band, in 11 venues and almost 100 different groups from all over the world, the range is vast and of very high quality.  If you have been with us in the past, you can repeat a great experience, if you are new to such festivals it really is a great place to start with a wonderful atmosphere.

To make your day out even more enjoyable, we have arranged a lunch at the White Lion Hotel in the High Street where you can meet up with old friends and of course make new ones.  The lunch is optional but is highly recommended and of course subsidised.  If you don't join the lunch, there are lots of places to eat and drink and the pubs are open all day.  Meet at the White Lion from 12 onwards for lunch at 1.

Your Jazz Day Ticket for the Saturday will allow you to attend any event at any venue.  Music starts at 9.00 am and ends around midnight.  Around the big marquees on Fish Meadow there will be the usual range of stalls for added interest, sustenance and shopping.

Your one-day ticket would cost £24 - we are offering it for £12.  The 2-course lunch (main and dessert) would cost £17.50 - we are offering it for £11.

Great value for a great day out!!

Tatton Flower Show 22nd July 2004 (organiser - Carole Robertson 0121 704 9677)

Being the Royal Horticultural Society's 2004 Show for the North, the Tatton Park Flower Show near Knutsford has much to offer gardening enthusiasts.  As well as feasting your eyes on the flowers and shrubs, there are many opportunities for refreshments when convenient.

Tatton Park is a National Trust property and you may well have time to visit other areas as well as the Flower Show.

Advance Notice

Three Choirs Vineyard and Brewery 19th August 2004 (organiser - Rick Paslawski 0121 705 7719)

We are organising a visit to the vineyard and brewery at Newent on the Gloucester/Hereford border. It is planned for us to arrive around 10.45 and there will then be a tour of the winery and brewery, together with tastings (of course!), starting at 11.00. This will be followed by a two course lunch which will be served in the private dining room which caters for a maximum of twenty people. The last time I was there I found the food to be excellent, so I am confident that we will be presented with a very tasty meal. The choice of menu will be in the May Newsletter, together with a booking form.

As the vineyard is so easy to get to, a coach will not be laid on UNLESS MEMBERS EXPRESS A STRONG DESIRE FOR A COACH TO BE LAID ON, so please let the organiser know asap if you would prefer to be taken by coach. The vineyard is very close to the M50; follow the signs for Newent at J3 of the M50 (B4215) and the vineyard is just north of Newent and clearly signed.

Costs are expected to be £15.00 per member and first guest for the trip with some wine included, or £20.00 per head if a coach is laid on.  Due to the high cost of a small coach no wine would be provided with lunch should the trip be made with a coach provided.

As numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of twenty, early requests for places are essential, together with an expression of preference as to travel arrangements.

Please let the organiser know your preference by e-mail at rickpaslawski@tesco.net or by phone.

Bob Marvin

We regret to inform members of the death of Bob Marvin.  From post-boy at 16 through programming, systems analysis, SE management and Sales over a 32 year career, Bob exemplified the personal growth opportunities available to talented, hardworking staff.  A book produced jointly with Frank Broad and Tony Gladwin - "From out of the Blue" - provided a fascinating insight into the growth of IBM in the west Midlands.

Our deepest condolences to Pat and the family.

Brian Chilver
