December 2004 Newsletter

The 2004 programme of events had mixed support from members and we had to cancel the quiz night due to insufficient numbers to make it a viable event.  However, it was noticeable that all events which took place were much enjoyed by the members who attended.

Looking into the New Year, your Committee are organising some interesting events.  One feature of the programme is that we are offering events which are two days or more and your comments would be appreciated - one aspect which I mentioned last month is that we have to ask for money up-front to cover outlay for items such as entry fees which have to be paid for but this will be clarified for each specific event.

The 2005 programme can be seen by clicking on '2005 Diary' at the head of this Newsletter or, for those without internet access, it will be available on the cards which are distributed at the Christmas Lunch or posted with the Newsletter.

First up in the New Year will be the meal at the Emperors Chinese Restaurant in Leamington which is being repeated by popular request.  In February, there will be Sunday lunch at Ryton Organic Gardens which is well worth a visit and will give you an opportunity to check out the pros and cons of organic food.  Not only that, but after lunch we have a highly recommended speaker who will keep us entertained with stories about pawnbroking (amongst other things).  Further details and booking forms can be found later in this Newsletter.

If any of your personal details change - address, telephone number, e-mail addresses, etc. - please note that the only person who can action changes is our Membership Secretary, Gordon Jones. Gordon can be contacted by e-mail at  or telephone 01455-556192.

Finally, we wish all members a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Early Spring Sunday Lunch with Speaker 20th February 2005 (organiser Anne Hope)

Do come and enjoy an early spring Sunday lunch at the HDRA Organic Gardens at Ryton on 20 February 2005.  Pre-lunch drinks will be served from 12.30 for 1.00 pm - drinks at the table will be at individual expense.

The Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA) is the national charity for organic gardening and horticulture. Ryton is a thriving site where vegetables, flowers, shrubs and trees live in harmony with wildlife. You will be able to browse or buy at the well stocked organic shop or maybe wander, weather permitting, around the beautiful, totally organic, garden.  Leave yourself enough time to look around - you may like to visit their web site at for a pre-view of what there is to see and do.

Our speaker after lunch will be Suzanne Morgan who will regale us with "Tales of a Modern-day Lady Pawnbroker".  Suzanne's talks have successfully entertained many groups round the Midlands and we should be no exception.

All this for £16 for members and first guest, £20 for further guests.

How to get there

If coming from Warwick area, head northbound on the A46, leave at the A45 intersection and head eastbound; members who live near Birmingham or Solihull may already be on the A45.  The next roundabout is the junction where the A46 leaves to join up with the M69 and members living in the direction of Leicester may wish to come down the M69/A46 and turn left onto the A45.

Continue on the A45 eastbound and you will shortly see the Peugueot factory on your right hand side (watch out for the speed cameras which take your picture if you exceed 50mph).  About half mile there is a crossroads - the A445 from Leamington comes in from the right; take the left turn which is signed 'Wolston' and there is also a brown sign labelled 'Ryton Gardens'.  HDRA is about half a mile along on the right hand side.  There is plenty of parking.

Finally, for those members who might be coming from  the east on the A45, look for the roundabout at the junction of the Fosse Way A4455, continue on the A45 for a short distance until you see the turning for Wolston on your right .

Annual General Meeting 17th March 2005

As a change from the normal format of AGM followed by optional lunch in the IBM canteen, we are planning to follow the formal business of the AGM with lunch at a local hostelry.  This will give a chance to bend the ears of the Committee in an informal atmosphere and we hope members will take the opportunity to do this. Further details and a booking form will be available in the January Newsletter.

A note on last year. Airedale travel wrote to me to let me know that they no longer use the coach operator European Coachways, the subcontract company they used for us last May. They must have given the same great service to others. G.J.
