IBM Retirees Club (Midlands)

December 2008 Newsletter

We had a very enjoyable day out in Malvern, visiting the Morgan factory after a stop in Worcester for lunch, then on to the theatre for a meal, followed by a performance of 'Buddy'.  A long day but well worth it - our thanks to Dave Compton and Ken Hope for all their efforts in making it happen.

Our trips to the Three Choirs vineyard always seem popular and our visit organised by Phil Dalton proved no exception, so much so that he has already been asked to repeat it.  It is also popular with Three Choirs (not surprising as we buy some of their excellent wine) and Phil is now the proud possessor of a 10% discount card which we can all share in.  Thanks Phil, please do it again as your editor was unable to attend this time.

And thanks again to Dave Compton for organising the Turkish meal with a belly dancer.  Several members of the party were tempted to try out their (Turkish) dancing skills and a good time was had by all.  Where are you taking us next year, Dave?? Suggestions welcomed.

You will see announcements later in this Newsletter for our Spring Lunch and also the Rambling Club trip to Torquay, together with booking forms.  There is also a pre-announcement for our day out to Greenwich in March.

Dates for events later in the year will be announced in the Newsletter as soon as available; a card issued at the Christmas Lunch details the programme and you can also click on the 2009 Diary link at the end of this Newsletter which I will keep updated.

One event we have not finalised is a trip to Bristol, possibly second half of May.  Severall possibilities such as a visit to the SS Great Britain, the harbourside museum, plenty of shopping for the ladies, and the fact that boat trips around the floating harbour are available.   Please let me know if you have any comments or suggestions - we visited the SS Great Britain several years ago and I know several members would like a repeat.

Members have commented that they are not able to easily contact Committee members.  I have therefore re-instated the Committee Contact link at the end of the Newsletter.

Several members will have enjoyed trips organised by IBM Club Birmingham.  Mike Cashmore has asked me to publicise their agenda for 2009 and I am happy to do this.  Details later in this Newsletter.

Finally, on behalf of the Committee, may I wish all members and their families a Very Happy Christmas and New Year.  Perhaps we will see you at some of our events in 2009.

Day Trip to Greenwich 5th March 2009 - Preliminary Announcement

Roger Goodman and Alan Bridgman are planning a day trip to Greenwich on Thursday 5th March 2009. The main aim of the trip is to visit the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Greenwich Observatory, but Greenwich is an area that has much more to explore. For those of you who know the NMM and Observatory well, why not try the Fan Museum, the Queen's House or the Cutty Sark. Or if you have a real adventurous streak, why not walk under the Thames through the Greenwich Foot Tunnel to the Isle of Dogs? Lunch will be included. Cost will be no more than £30 per head. Booking form will be available in the January Newsletter, but please let Roger or Alan know if you are interested in the trip for them to gauge numbers.
