Editorial
The Summer Lunch was enjoyed by the 52 attendees. We have had a number of favourable comments, particularly about the food; the venue was also very good - all helped by the weather. Thanks to Carole Robertson for all her efforts.
The Upton Jazz Festival had 37 attendees - a record number - of whom 25 enjoyed an excellent lunch at the White Lion. Brian Chilver is to be congratulated on another successful visit to Upton. Pity he couldn't do anything about the weather but at least the rain moderated during the afternoon and didn't dampen our enjoyment of the music.

There are two events this month. Our visit to Fairford for the flying display on the 18th is fully booked and promises to be an interesting day, particularly for all us ex-RAF types.
On Thursday 22nd we visit Tatton Flower Show which again is fully booked - as a reminder, we will leave Warwick top car park at 09:00 which will leave time for a coffee stop before arrival at Knutsford at about 11:45. We leave Knutsford at 17:00.

Upton House Tuesday 7th September 2004 (organiser - Iain Hewitt 01295 670316)
Bookings are now being taken for the Retiree Club private visit to Upton House in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds as highlighted in last month’s newsletter.
The programme for the day is:
10:15 check in (please be prompt)
10:30 coffee and cake in Pavilion Restaurant
11:00 private guided tour of Upton House
12:30 buffet lunch in Pavilion Restaurant
TYPICAL MENU
Cold meat platter
Poached salmon
Chicken coronation
Stilton & broccoli quiche
Various salads
Crusty French bread
After lunch members would be welcome to retour the house and the spectacular gardens at no extra cost; alternatively various nearby attractions were listed in last month’s newsletter. If sufficient numbers are interested in any of these attractions I will endeavour to obtain group entry fees - please indicate on booking form. I can also provide directions to any of the featured attractions.
This is a self-drive visit: there is ample parking (on grass) at Upton House - on the A422 Stratford to Banbury road on the county boundary.
Cost to members and first guests £12-50; extra guests £22 / head.
As the House will be closed to the public for our visit there will be no reduction for National Trust members. (The house and gardens open to the public at lunchtime)
There is a limit on the numbers that can be accommodated so please get your bookings in early using attached booking form. (By 27 August latest please)

Tour of Nottingham 16th September 2004 (organiser Brian Wilson 01926-777710)
We have decided that this will be a 'drive yourself' event as we have not had any requests to provide a coach. Please meet at the Cafe Francais which is just inside the main entrance to the Broadmarsh Shopping centre at 10:30. This will give time for refreshments before the Blue Guide takes us on our tour. If anybody needs more detailed directions, I will collate requests and publish in the August Newsletter.
The preferred option for travel is to use the Queens Drive Park and Ride which is on the A453 near Clifton Bridge; this will cost £2.50 for the day and the bus drops you off at the Broadmarsh. However, you can park in the city centre although somewhat more expensive - also, train is another option.
The pub where we are having lunch can do a buffet or you can order off their menu. I am advised that if the latter, we would be better doing a pre-order. I don't have the menu to hand but can put this in the August Newsletter - however, I understand that it is a fairly typical range of dishes that pubs offer. The buffet consists of sandwiches (tuna, beef, cheese), samosas, chicken satay, chilli con carne (hot), jacket potatoes (hot), onion rings, spicy potato wedges. Please indicate on the booking form whether you would like the buffet or would opt for something off the bar menu. Your lunch is included in the price (for one course) and you will be responsible for your own drinks.
After lunch, feel free to do your own thing but we can add a visit to the Galleries of Justice as an extra. Please indicate on the booking form if this would be of interest. The Blue Guide will be happy to advise on alternative attractions.
For the Blue Guide tour and lunch including tales by the Story Teller and also visit to Galleries of Justice, we are charging £7 for members and first guest and £10 per head for second guests.

Eden Project 1st - 3rd October 2004 (organiser - Iain Hewitt 01295 670316)
The cost for the 3 day break to the lovely 3 star Cliff Head hotel at Carlyon Bay including breakfast and dinner plus entry to the magnificent Eden Project and the mysterious Lost Gardens at Heligan is working out at £115 / head for members and first guests. The price to other guests remains at £145 (this price compares well to identical trips offered in the public domain at £174-50 per person.
There is an indoor swimming pool at the hotel as well as sauna and solarium, so don't forget your gear. Details of the departure time from IBM Warwick by executive coach with WC/washroom will be announced nearer the occasion.
In the meantime payment of the balance is due at least 6 weeks prior to departure, so could you please let me have your cheques payable to IBM Retirees Club (Midlands):
