March 2009 Newsletter

Editorial

The Spring Lunch in Stratford on 22nd of February attracted 64 members and guests, ably entertained by Brenda Leedham who was involved in the RSC wardrobe department for many years.  Brenda brought along lots of wigs, makeup, etc and demonstrated the effect of these on some willing (?) volunteers before we broke for lunch.  The Shakespeare is a most attractive hotel and well worth a look round.  Many thanks to Ken Hope for all his hard work organising this event.

Also in March is the Annual General Meeting on the 16th.   Please check the revised announcement, in particular the change of location to the Falcon Inn and the earlier start time of 10:00.

Gordon Jones tells me that there are still a few places on the Rambling Club trip to Torquay.   Contact him asap if you would like to go to what is a very pleasant part of the country.

--------------------------------------------------

Looking ahead, our trip to Northumberland in June is now 70% booked, so don't delay if you want to go on this.  The visit to Northern Ireland still has places left - see announcement later in this Newsletter.  We now have a date and location for the Summer Lunch - again, see announcement in this Newsletter.

--------------------------------------------------

The next meeting of the IBM Retirees PC & Technology Club will take place on April 17th (that's two weeks later than previously advertised).   See link at end of this newsletter for further details.

Northumberland – Sunday 14/06/09 to Thursday 18/06/09   (Organiser Tony Mancell)

This trip is now 70% full so if you want to go and haven't yet booked, please do so as soon as possible.  A detailed itinerary appeared in the February Newsletter but the following is a summary.

Hotel and Location - We will be based at the Cross Keys Hotel at Kelso - 4 nights half board, choice table d’hôte menu plus tea and coffee etc.

Day Trips – See February Newsletter but please ensure you indicate on the booking form if you are a member of the National Trust and/or English Heritage, as this could reduce the holiday costs (to you) as we will not have to pay the entrance fees on your behalf. This includes the landing fee for the Farne Islands.

If you do not want to be included in the trip to the Farne Island, please let me know via the booking form and you will be free to explore Seahouses shops, harbour etc. while the rest of the group explore the Inner Farne Islands. If you’re unsure on this option, I will need your choice on this trip nearer the holiday date.

The total cost for members will be £290.00 this includes the entrance fees, as above, assuming you are not NT or EH members. I have secured two single places at no additional costs.  Cost for second guests will be £352 per person.

A deposit of £35.00 per person is required with your booking form.

I will let each individual know their actual costs (reductions) depending on their membership of the National Trust & English Heritage and if they wish to opt-out of the Farne Island Trip.

Trip to Northern Ireland – Monday 21st September to Friday 25th September 2009 (Organiser - Alan Bridgman)

I am very close to being able to run this trip with 18 people having booked already. But I am still a few people short of the minimum number of 25 (i.e. 3 - 4 couples). I have arranged with the travel agents to extend the deadline from the end of February to the end of March 2009, but it is going to be very difficult to extend this any further.

This is a unique trip to a part of the world that very few people have visited, but all of us have heard of. We all have seen so many pictures of Belfast and other towns and cities in the province and I suspect that most of us could even name many of the streets in Belfast. If you have ever had any thoughts of visiting this beautiful, fascinating and historic part of the world to put some flesh on the images and news items that you saw and heard, now is the time to do something about it. Please send me an email and I will forward you the booking form. I am repeating my orginal announcement of the details of the trip below:-

Northern Ireland, now that the ‘troubles’ are over (an English euphemism if ever I heard one!) has become a very popular tourist destination but without the infrastructure to support it. So, organizing this trip has been an interesting challenge.

The tour will take in some of the finest marine scenery in Europe and also include a guided tour of the handsome city of Belfast, including the new Titanic Quarter which you may have seen featured in a recent BBC Antiques Roadshow. Our accommodation for the main part of the trip is the excellent 4-star Stormont Hotel, overlooking the landscaped gardens of Stormont Castle.

Brief Itinerary

The cost will be approximately £320 per person for members and first guests. The cost for second guests will be approximately £400 per person. The cost includes 4 nights’ hotel accommodation plus dinner, bed and breakfast. Executive coach plus driver throughout. 2 ferry crossings. Morning guided tour of Belfast. Excursions as described.
