May 2007 Newsletter

Our trip to Kent was a great success, due in no small part to the weather being excellent.  Each of the places we visited had their own special points of interest and made a very worthwhile and interesting weekend.  Many thanks to Carole for organising this event.

This month sees a party of us visiting the Isle of Man.  Lots to see and do on this quite small island.

Two announcements and booking forms for you this month.  Firstly, we have our day out to the Denby Pottery and Kedleston Hall which should provide an interesting day out.  We are providing a coach from Warwick but appreciate that some members may find it more convenient to use their own transport so the cost of the event reflects this.

Secondly, there is our trip to the Loire Valley, organised by one of the newcomers to the Committee, Alan Palmer.  Having been to that area some years ago, I can recommend a visit.  Although the itinerary is not fully finalised, some up-front costs need to be paid (as seems to be usual these days) so if you would like a little more detail to help make up your mind, I'm sure Alan can field any questions you may have.

I have updated some of the "small print", i.e. our procedures. The files affected are the Newsletter Production and Archives which I have split into "Newsletter Production" and "Newsletter Archives"  which I hope will make the archived newletters more accesible and also the "General Notes about Events" file which has had a fairly extensive re-write.  This file contains some important information which you should be aware of.

You will have noted that recent booking forms have had a disclaimer which refers to the responsibilities of both Committee members and event attendees.  As this information is now available in the "General Notes About Events" file, future booking forms will only include a reference to the file.

Denby Pottery and Kedleston Hall - 11th July 2007  (organiser - Brian Wilson)

This day out takes us to Derbyshire and two very different venues.

Firstly to the Denby Pottery, where the well known pottery is made and where we are booked in for a Craftroom tour lasting about one hour and which introduces the various aspects of the manufacture of the pottery.  There will be an opportunity to look round the Visitor Centre where you will find the Denby and Dartington Crystal Factory shops, garden centre, gift shop and other establishments, together with Bourne's Restaurant where we are booked in for a two course lunch.

After lunch, we take the short drive to the impressive National Trust property at Kedleston Hall where there will be free time to view the house and extensive grounds.

The costs for this trip will be £15 for members and first guest to include coach travel from IBM Warwick, the Craftroom tour and the two-course lunch in Bourne's restaurant.  Entrance to Kedleston Hall is free for members of the National Trust, £8 for non-members.  Some members will find it more convenient to make their own way to Denby and Kedleston Hall, in which case the cost will be £8.00.

If you are a National trust member, don't forget your membership card.

Any problems on the day, ring the organiser on 0771 969 6312.

Trip to the Loire Valley 22 - 26 September 2007  (organiser Alan Palmer)

We are organising a visit to the Loire Valley.  This most attractive part of France is well known for its chateaux as well as being noted for some most drinkable wines.

This event consists of a five night DBB basis tour.  The itinerary has yet to be finalised but the outline is as follows:-

Costs will be £350 per person with single supplement of £90.  Travel insurance for those who do not have their own will be £20.15 per head.  We may be able to accomodate second guests at  cost of £400 perperson - please contact the organiser.

If you would like to go on this trip, we need a cheque for £45 per person by the 29th June; the balance together with the travel insurance payment (if applicable) will be requested in the July Newsletter so that we can make payments to the travel company by the end of July.

If you would like to have a preliminary look at the hotel in Tours, go to:-
