November 2006 Newsletter
Editorial
Thanks to Rick for organising the Rioja trip which lived up to the expectations of the 40 members and guests and provided an insight into an area of Spain that many people will not have visited - so much so that Rick says he would be happy to do it again.
Nearer home, 28 members and guests enjoyed our visit to the Hook Norton Brewery in deepest Oxfordshire - if you've never been it does seem to be a long way from anywhere else. However, the brewery staff had organised a very professional tour which involved a few flight of stairs but nobody seemed to mind too much; we were also treated to the sight (and sound) of the venerable steam engine which drove the machinery through a system of pulleys, belts and gears. All this was topped off with an excellent lunch at a pub with the rather interesting name of "The Gate Hangs High". Our thanks to Simon.
Later in this Newsletter you will find an announcement and booking form for the first event to be announced for 2007. This is a weekend at the Sporting Manor Hotel in Okehampton - this will need no introduction to the members who have been before but for anyone who hasn't been it would be worth asking Gordon for more information.

Sporting Manor, Okehampton 2nd - 4th March 2007 (organiser Gordon Jones)
We are running a weekend at the Sporting Manor Hotel near Okehampton, Devon, Friday 2nd March 2007 to Sunday 4th March 2007.
The terms are full board and there are various games and craft activities available such as snooker, bowls, swimming etc. Most are included in the cost but a small charge is applied to some of the craft activities for materials.
Use you own transport to get there as we would have no need for a coach while we are there.
Cost: Member and first guest --- £115.00. Second guests --- £135.00 All A rooms.
It is possible to add a day at either end of the weekend payable at the full daily rate.
I have up to 30 places reserved at present, it may be possible to get more. The hotel requires a deposit by 21 December so please send your cheques to arrive by 15th December - also indicate whether you would like to stay longer.
Please send a £25.00 deposit to: Gordon Jones, 34 Macaulay Rd, Lutterworth, LE17 4XB

Scams
I am sure you have heard about the various scams that pop up from time to time but hopefully have not fallen victim to any of them. A particularly nasty one has been brought to my attention - details are:-
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911. DO NOT call this (premium rate) number as it is a mail scam originating in Belize. If you call the number and start to hear a recorded message, you will already have been billed for £15 for the phone call.
If you do receive a card with these details, please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 239 6655 or ICTIS (the premium serve regulator) at http://www.icstis.org.uk or your local Trading Standards office. The scam is under investigation by ICSTIS.
If any members get to know of any scams they feel that other members should know about, please let me know.
