Retirees Club Events in the Time of COVID 19

As you will have read before, we are neither running nor planning Retirees Club events. We cancelled the two events that were planned this year, the trip to the Triumph Factory and the Spring Lunch, and refunded all members’ payments made to the club.

COVID has had little impact on the Midlands Retirees club finances; we have over £5000 in the bank, and few upcoming bills. IBM paid us the first half year grant in February, but is not making grant payments in the second half of this year, as we haven’t spent the first half’s yet!

Until recently, the IBM UK Club Oversight Manager’s guidance was to neither plan nor run events. In light of the gradual reopening of businesses, they’ve updated that to say we can book future events provided they are refundable if COVID 19 circumstances impact an event, and the club and event follow local and national government COVID guidelines. That guidance is aimed at both the Local IBM clubs for current employees and Retiree clubs like us.

Given that our retiree members’ age puts almost all of us in the “at risk” group, the Midlands Retirees club committee is still not planning any “real” events this year; in particular no Christmas lunch at an hotel or restaurant.

We will continue to use the club’s Zoom account to hold video meetings, and look forward to seeing as many of you that wish to join in. We try to think of other ways we can fulfil the club’s constitutional objective of organising recreational, educational and social activities for its members and their guests, though COVID 19 makes that hard!

Paul Gover, Treasurer.

If you need help with Zoom contact John Rickman (rickman@argonet.co.uk) in good time before the meeting.

The meeting on September 18th will continue the topic of “Building a Website with WordPress Software.”

What is WordPress?

WordPress is the simplest, most popular way to create your own website. In fact, WordPress powers over 37% of all the websites on the Internet including companies such as SONY, New York Times, and Facebook.

WordPress is an open-source website content management system licensed under GPLv2, which means that anyone can use the WordPress software for free. WordPress makes building a website accessible to anyone — even people who aren’t developers.

See here for more information about the Group.
