IBM Retirees Club (Midlands)

January 2010 Newsletter

113 members and guests booked for our Christmas Lunch at the Honiley Court Hotel. The food and location were excellent but differing views were expressed on service.   Our thanks to Alan Palmer for his organisation and also a vote of thanks to Phil Dalton and Simon Barratt for creating our 2010 events card and the colourful place markers indicating choice of menu.

There is quite a lot happening on the events front for 2010 and I have included a summary in the Newsletter of the latest position.

Further to the note last month regarding the Midlands Retirees Constitution, I have included a link to the proposed new Constitution which you will be asked to approve at the AGM in March; the main body of the document has been signed off by IBM Human Resources but please note that the section on eligiblity has not yet had formal sign off.  When the new Constitution has been approved, I will then re-arrange the links to reflect this.

Some members will remember the Burns Night Supper which we supported in 2009 and was in aid of the Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Heskett Dawson tells me that the GDBA are not sponsoring a Burns Night this year (although they may do in 2011) but Stratford-on-Avon Caledonian Society are supporting GDBA as part of their Burns Night Supper on 23rd January.  If you would like to go please click on each of the three links below for further information and booking form.  As an added incentive, see the raffle prizes from the link Burns4.

One or two people have expressed concerns about the visit to the Bovington Tank Museum, and so we may use the visit to the home of T.E.Lawrence as an alternative to the Tank Museum.  Alan will sort out the final details nearer the time and when the weather lets him get down to Dorset.

Stratford Races - Monday 15th March 2010 (Organiser Barry Wiggins)

After a 5 year break we are again planning a day at the races to help blow away the winter blues. This meeting is just before the National Hunt Festival at Cheltenham and is designated "Irish Day" possibly due to the amount of Guiness consumed.

We will have tickets for the Club enclosure which give access to all racecourse amenities and there is an option for lunch in the Paddock restaurant before racing. Those opting for lunch will be able to use our table as a base all day and will also be served afternoon tea.

Stratford racecourse is easy to reach and has excellent facilities with comfortable viewing and betting facilities whatever the weather. With a bit of luck (or inside information) this could be a free day out.

Please see booking form for prices and booking details and return by by 12th February please.

Royal Day Out - Wednesday 15th September 2010  (organiser Dave Compton)

The proposed day trip to London by coach to visit the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Mews and the Queen’s Collection will be on Wednesday 15th September 2010. A coach will leave IBM Warwick about 8am returning about 8pm.  The inclusive cost is likely to be between £35 and £45 per person (second guests between £40 and £50), depending on final numbers.

We need to purchase Buckingham Palace tickets well ahead, so we are now asking for a deposit of £10 per person (returnable if there are insufficient numbers to make the trip viable). Please complete the booking form with details of both first and second guests and sent with your cheques to Dave Compton ( by Monday 15th February 2010.

The combined visit is expected to take about 5-6 hours, including a break for lunch (not included), and may involve a fair amount of walking although there are facilities for wheelchairs if booked in advance.
