July 2011 Newsletter

Editorial

The visit to Malvern Show was enjoyed by those who went, all helped by good weather.  Thanks to Tony for organising this one.

Coming up, the Summer Lunch is not too far off, so if you haven't yet booked, don't delay.  Same applies to our trip to Longleat at the beginning of September - I'm repeating the announcement later in this Newsletter for your convenience.  I believe that there are four places available on the trip to the Olympic site but, again, don't delay.

The Christmas Lunch this year will be at the Ardencote on 20th December.  Further details and booking form will be available in a later Newsletter

After having to cancel the trip to Arras this year due to a certain person deciding to get married, I am pleased to say that GTL are able to to offer a similar package for 2012.  See announcement later in this Newsletter.

                                                                                         --------------------------------------------------

You will see that Alan Bridgman has made mention of a proposed new web site for the Retirees.  From my own point of view this is somewhat overdue as the present system is beginning to creak a little.  We are in the very early stages of development but what we have done so far looks promising.  If anyone has any suggestions as to what sort of things they would like to see, please let Alan or me know. Of course, if anyone would like to get involved, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Chairman's Notes

Quite of number of things have happened in the last month, which you might be interested to know about.

Lorna McDaid, the UK Retiree Administrator, left IBM on July 5th. It was Lorna who identified a source of IBM Retiree Badges and sent me a large supply. All the Retiree Clubs in the UK contributed to a leaving present for Lorna, who has provided us all with an excellent service for many years. So far, we have not been informed of any replacement for her.

The IBM Pensions Trust Have asked all Retiree Clubs if they will inform their members about a new campaign "Time to go Paperless". I would urge as many members as possible to sign up to this initiative. Please have a look at the details on the IBM Pensions Trust website, where there is a Q&A section to explain the benefits of signing up. http://www.smartpensionsuk.co.uk/index.php/765/time-to-go-paperless

My thanks to everyone who completed an Events Suggestion form for 2012 events. I was amazed to discover, when I counted them all up, that so far we have 50 suggestions to take into our Event Planning meeting on 15 August - we have never been so well prepared!

At the meeting of the PC Club sub-section on Friday 15th July, Brian Wilson and I will be presenting our requirements for an IBM Midlands Retirees Club website. Hopefully this will be the first website that the PC Club starts to build. If we are successful, in the next newsletter we will tell you what we want the website to achieve and invite your comments.

Alan Bridgman, Chairman

Longleat - Wednesday September 7th (organizer Phil Dalton)

A fantastic day out to Longleat. Your coach will depart from IBM Warwick at 08:00 and arrive at Longleat shortly after the opening time. After an initial tour of the Safari Park, the coach will drop you off to enjoy the many attractions of Longleat. No matter whether it is just the House and Grounds you wish to explore or spend more time going around the Safari Park. But don't forget there is also the new Jungle Kingdom, a new multi-million pound attraction for you to explore. Meerkats run around your feet, lorikeets land on your hand and monkeys swing down from their temple and climb all around you. Set sail on a sea lion escorted Jungle Cruise adventure or board the thrilling Jungle Express. If that's not enough there is also the Bat Cave, a real one and not the one containing the Batmobile and Robin! Finally and if that isn't enough, there is the 3D Hedge maze, but don't get lost in there as the coach will depart at 16:30 for the journey back to IBM Warwick.

Cost for this amazing day out is going to be in the range of £20-£27 for members and first guests depending upon the number of people travelling (£35 for second guests). Included in the price is the coach from IBM Warwick (Attendees can board at Johnsons coach depot at Henley-in-Arden if preferred, time to be advised) and a Day Ticket permitting entrance to all attractions at Longleat. No meals are included nor any additional charges for attractions at Longleat.

Please send a deposit of £10 per person to the organizer Phil Dalton (Email: phil_dalton@btinternet.com Tel: 0791-8131503) with a completed booking form by Monday August 1st.

Trip to Arras 16-20 April 2012 - four nights (organiser Brian Wilson)

This trip was originally planned for April this year but due to a certain royal wedding had to be postponed.  I have been in contact with GTL and they are able to offer us a similar package to the original for 2012 with the difference that it is £50 cheaper but we only get one nights dinner, which could be an advantage as there are some good restaurants in Arras.  Allowing for price and tax increase, that seems a good deal but of course you are the judges.

We may make some adjustments to the schedule to accommodate member's suggestions but I would suggest a visit to the V2 rocket site at St. Omer, to Crystal d'Arques glass factory and shop and perhaps some time in Lille.

Because of the lead time we are making an announcement now to enable you to get the dates in your diaries.  At this stage I am asking for a deposit of £10 per person with the remainder nearer the time.  We may be able to include second guests so please note their names on the booking form.

· Day 1. Travel from IBM Warwick with appropriate comfort breaks to the 3* Hotel Mercure Atria in Arras for four nights bed and breakfast with dinner included tonight.

· Day 2. An included visit to the WW1 underground city built by our Tommies, with time at leisure in Arras.

· Day 3. Day out to Lille - or maybe another venue.  Suggestions welcomed.

· Day 4. Battlefield tour. This will not just be to cemeteries but will include sites of interest from WW1.

· Day 5. Return to UK

The cost for this will be £349.50 less the subsidy which has not yet been worked out. If you would like to join this trip, please send the booking form together with your deposit of £10 per person:-

Brian Wilson, 7 Knightlow Close, KENILWORTH, Warwickshire, CV8 2PX.

Sub-Groups of  IBM Club and Retirees Club

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group (founded by Harry Green)

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC "techie" topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography . So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.
