Chairman’s Notes

It’s that time again! The Club’s AGM is looming up again on Monday 21st March. This year there are a number of important matters that will need to be discussed:-

  1. The introduction of Defined Contribution pensioners, which will require a change to our Constitution
  2. Sadly, this year 3 of our Committee members are having to stand down, so we need to recruit some replacements
  3. Our IBM Grant has been cut yet again, so we may need to cut either some events or the level of subsidy that we usually try and provide

Please make every effort to attend and if your decide to come, please let Brian Long (brianlong1@hotmail.com) know so that he can ensure that the British Legion can cater for everyone at lunch. Remember, we provide a free lunch for all attendees!

Although we shall provide copies of last year’s AGM Minutes for approval, paper copies of the AGM Agenda, and copies of the Club’s amended Constitution, I have asked our Newsletter Editor to include the AGM Agenda in this Newsletter for your information. You will see that the good news is that we have three additional speakers this year — the IBM Clubs Oversight Manager from North Harbour, and Chris Wynne, the IBM Warwick location manager — both of whom have spoken at our AGM in the past. And last, but not least, a new presentation from our very own Gary Wooding!

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the AGM in March.

Chairman

UPDATED Spring Lunch Wednesday 23rd March 2016 (Organiser Gary Wooding)

Honiley Court Hotel

Owing to circumstances beyond my control, the venue for this year’s Spring Lunch has had to be changed to the 16th Century Honiley Court Hotel, but the date remains the same - Wednesday 23rd March.

I apologise for any inconvenience this has created, but hope you will welcome the price reduction.

For those who have already booked for the Polo Club, please let me know if you wish to cancel or rebook for the new venue. Since the menu is changed I will require your new choices on the new booking form — I can either destroy the old cheques, or return them at the lunch. Please let me know.

The address is: Honiley Court Hotel, Meer End Road (better known as the A4177), Honiley, Warwickshire, CV8 1NP.

I have booked the same guest speaker who told us about finger printing two years ago, but this time she will be telling us about the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. The price for this event, which includes a welcome drink, 3 course lunch, ½ bottle of wine, rounded off with tea/coffee, is dependent on the IBM subsidy which has been reduced yet again, and is £31.50 for members/first guest, and £44.00 for any subsequent guests. As in previous years, wine vouchers will be supplied to purchase a ½ bottle of the supplied wine or as part or full payment for any other drinks of your choice - change will not be given.

Please make your menu choices from the following sample menu, which could change:

Combined Rambling and Sightseeing trip to Norfolk, Monday 20th to Friday 24th June Organisers: Alan Bridgman (Sightseeing) and Terry King (Rambling)

We have decided this year to go to Norfolk, a charming county which has a wide variety of countryside and attractions. We are using the services of Group Travel again and we are booked into the George Hotel in Swaffham. Swaffham is a Georgian Market town, which is within easy reach of Norwich, the Norfolk Broads and the North Coast.

Itinerary

Norfolk The sightseeing itinerary will hopefully include some or all of the following:- We shall probably stop in Ely on the way up to Swaffham, and in Bury St Edmunds on the way back.

Provisional Cost
Depending on the number of people who wish to go on this trip and the size of the IBM grant (which we do not know yet!), the approximate cost for members and first guests will be £350; and £400 for 2nd guests. This cost includes 4 nights half-board accommodation (DBB), executive coach travel to & from IBM Warwick and for excursions during the trip.

Finaly…
If anyone has any further suggestions for sightseeing trips, please let me know. (no promises, mind you!!) and I will do my best to include them in the final itinerary.

Sightseeing organiser

Sub-Groups of Retirees Club and Employee Club

IBM Retirees Rambling Group

The IBM (Warwick) Rambling Club is now a subsection of the IBM Midlands Retiree Club. Any member of the Midlands Retiree club is welcome to join our subsection. Our subs are £5 per person per year. Our programme consists of a meal in late February, a monthly ramble with a pub lunch using own transport and an AGM in December. We also share a 3-4 day trip using coach transport with retiree sightseers in May.

Any retiree who would like to give us a try, can come along on one of our monthly walks without needing to join. Meal subsidies are available only to members and not for those joining us on a trial basis.

For a list of the planned walks for 2016 and other information, please see the IBM Rambling Club Annual Newsletter.

For more information, please contact Terry King, terryaking@hotmail.com.

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group (founded by Harry Green)

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC “techie” topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography. So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.
