May 2020 Newsletter

We have started to use the Zoom video conferencing application for our committee meetings and this has worked well for us.

We would therefore like to try organising online events for club members. These events could be quizzes, special interest or hobby groups, such as book clubs, and having an opportunity for general socialising.

Some of of you have probably already used Zoom and some of you will be new to it. We propose having an introductory trial of Zoom next Monday 11 May at 11 a.m. If you would like to take part in this trial, could you advise our club secretary, Ray Bradshaw, whose email address is We will then send you a meeting invite next Monday morning before 11 a.m.

If you are new to Zoom you will need to download the Zoom web browser client first (from There is no charge connected with this. Alternatively, on a mobile phone you can download and install the Zoom app from the App Store for iOS or Google Play for Android.

Once you have the Zoom Client software installed you just need to click on the link in the invitation email from us to join this trial meeting. Request both audio and video linking.

The Zoom application is supported on most hardware platforms and operating systems. You will need either a desktop computer or laptop with a built in webcam and microphone or with an attached webcam & mic. Tablets such as the Apple iPad and smartphones with Apple or Android systems can also be used, although the smart phone screens are rather limited by their size.

We would also like to hear from everyone your ideas of how we could use Zoom in future.

We will inform everyone of the date and time of future Zoom events once we have planned them.

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group (founded by Harry Green)

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC “techie” topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography. So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.

See here for more information.
