Editorial 

Two events to report.  A select group went to the races at Stratford - I don't think too much money was made but everybody enjoyed themselves.  

Secondly, the AGM was attended by 48 members and guests - the venue at the British Legion in Knowle was thought by most to be a good choice; most importantly we got through the business without too much dissention including passing the the new Constitution which can now be viewed via the link at the end of the Newsletter.   You can look at the AGM minutes by clicking the link at the end of the Newsletter or here. I must also mention that Dave Dagley was elected to the Committee and we hope he will enjoy his time with us. 

Two dates for your diary.  Firstly, there is the announcement in this Newsletter of the Summer Lunch at the Oak Hockley Heath on 9th June , secondly we now have the date of our the Christmas Lunch which will be on Thursday 16th December at the Honiley Court Hotel -  both locations were voted to be excellent by most of those who attended last year so were felt worth repeating.

I am also including an announcement for a trip to Paris by Eurostar which is part of the London West Club's programme.  If you haven't been to Paris in a while, this is a good opportunity - see the announcement and booking form later in this Newsletter.  Please note the cut off date and Rachel tells me that there are only 6 places left so don't delay.

I have updated the procedures for Event Booking and Organiser Responsibilities.  To summarise, you will in future be asked for your IBM personel number on a booking form - this is to enable us to check that anybody who submits a booking form is entitled to do so; we do of course know many of the members personally but you might be surprised to see some of the requests we have had to take part in our events.  Also, the organiser will forward cheques to the Treasurer once the event has been determined as viable - the reason for this is to help our cash flow as, particularly for a major event, there is a lot of money flying about.

17-20 May - Trip to Isle of Purbeck  This trip is now fully booked and there is a wait list.

9 June Summer Lunch   Bookings now being taken - see announcement later in this Newsletter.

11 July - Narrowboat Meal  Fully booked but check with Peter Barnes for any cancellations.

6-9 August - Constable Country  Fully booked.

20 August - Visit to Highgrove  Fully booked - see note later in this Newsletter.

15th September  Royal Day Out  This trip is now fully booked and there is a wait list.

25 September  Shuttleworth  Details to be announced

16 December - Christmas Lunch  Details later

Chairman's Jottings

My thanks to those of you who made it to the AGM in Knowle or voted "remotely" on the new constitution. We can now go forward into the new year hopeful that we have a firm base and agreement with IBM HR on which to continue to build our programme of events. Alan Bridgman took the lead in negotiating with HR and the other Retiree Club Chairs on that. Those who made it to Knowle will know how good the buffet was. My thanks go to Carole Robertson for arranging that and to Phil Dalton for his clear presentation of the financial position and event participation numbers.

Meanwhile our 2010 programme continues apace with three events already behind us. Most events fill up rapidly, so please check ahead and pencil reminders to book in your diaries for any in which you wish to participate. We try to vary the type of event to widen interest. This year, we have three very different events the like of which we have not run for some years namely -a narrow boat meal, a Warner Break and The Birmingham Tattoo.

Finally, I'd like to welcome Dave Dagley to the Committee. He joined at the AGM and will be put to work asap!

The Summer Luncheon  this year will be held at The Oak, Stratford Road [A34}, Hockley Heath - 01564 785252 , web site  www.theoakathockleyheath.co.uk.   Weather permitting we plan to meet on the patio at 12.00 for welcome drinks and have a three-course meal with wine at 1.00 in the back restaurant.

As we had such a successful luncheon in 2009 at The Oak, we have decided to return there this year. The food as you will see from the attached menu and booking form is very tempting and we have managed to keep to last year's price of £25 per head for members and first guests.

PARIS BY EUROSTAR - FRIDAY 25TH TO SUNDAY 27TH JUNE 2010

IBM Club London West is running a trip to Paris by Eurostar and staying at a central Paris hotel .  If you would like to go, please complete the booking form as soon as possible as there is a cut off date of 23rd April.  Cost for member and first guest is £190, for second and subsequent guests the cost is £250 per person.

Once a booking has been confirmed this is non-transferable and non-refundable owing to Eurostar terms and conditions. Any cancellations would have to be claimed against your insurance.  Please sign the booking form to confirm you have your own travel insurance - if you don't have your own insurance, you can do this when booking at a supplement of £16 per person but please advise when booking if you wish to do this. 

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE PRICE

The hotel is located right in the heart of Paris close to the Marais area. Within a short walk of the hotel's front door are such sights as the historically important Place de la Bastille, the awe-inspiring and famous Notre Dame Cathedral, the cafes and restaurants of the Latin Quarter on the banks of the River Seine, the ancient and stunningly beautiful Isle St Louis, the boutique shops and pretty narrow streets of the Marais, and the Places des Vosges, Paris' oldest and prettiest square surrounded by beautiful trees and stunning 17th century architecture. There are also several metro stops close to the hotel, giving very easy access to the whole of the French Capital.

All rooms at the hotel are furnished in a 17th century style with en-suite facilities and free wifi access. Breakfast is served continental style in the charming vaulted cellar with its attractive exposed stone.

HIGHGROVE UPDATE

The response for the Highgrove trip in August has been fabulous, over forty members and guests applied this year. Sadly Highgrove operate a very strict rule, groups of 25 only, due to the very tight security.

I have had to disappoint so many of our members this year that I am planning to run a third trip to Highgrove early in 2011. Those who have not been successful this year will most certainly be invited to join us for Spring 2011.
