In this newsletter we have the announcement of a trip to the National Arboretum at Westonbirt and further details of the trip to Abbey-Cwm-Hir.

We also have further calls for the trips to the Cosford Air Show and the Tatton Park RHS Flower Show.

There are a few places still available for the day trip to Greenwich, and the trips to Sidmouth and Paris, so if you have been pondering any of these, now is the time to act!.

Let me also remind you of the Summer Luncheon which promises to be an excellent event as usual.

Chairman’s Notes

Since I last wrote to you all in February, we have had a very successful AGM. It was the best attended AGM that we have had for many years. My thanks to everyone who attended and particularly to our two guest speakers — Fiona Clements, our IBM Oversight Manager, who drove all the way up from IBM North Harbour that morning, and to Brian Chilver, from our own IBM Midlands Retirees’ community. At our last Committee meeting we agreed that we would like to find another IBM Retiree member to give another talk next year, so come on Ladies and Gentlemen, get in touch with your creative sides.

As usual, our events have a Curate’s Egg quality about them. Some have been fully booked; some seem to be struggling to make the minimum number for the event to be viable; and some have such low bookings that they are in danger of being cancelled. Indeed Michael Fabianski has had to cancel the trip to Cheddar Gorge this month. So please, if you are hesitating about which events to go on, read this Newsletter and book as many events as possible.

SECOND CALL — Day trip to Greenwich — Tuesday May 21st (Organiser David Dagley)

Our coach will leave IBM Warwick at 8:00am and travel to Tower Pier (by the Tower of London) where we plan to embark on the 11.25am Citycruise boat travelling along the River Thames to arrive at Greenwich Pier at 12 noon.

On arrival at Greenwich we have time to visit one of many nearby attractions such as, The Cutty Sark, Greenwich Market or any other of choice(map will be provided).

We will then meet up for pub lunch at 1.15pm at the historic Trafalgar Tavern, overlooking the river and frequented by Charles Dickens (5 minute walk from the pier). Afterwards you will have the rest of the afternoon to explore the many museums and tourist attractions in the area. We will meet up with the coach in Greenwich at 4.30pm to travel back to Warwick. Estimated return time will be 7:00 - 7:30pm.

GREENWICH is designated as a World Heritage Site and its many attractions include the National Maritime Museum, the Queen's House, The Royal Observatory, the Prime Meridian and the Peter Harrison Planetarium, The Fan Museum, the Painted Hall in the Old Royal Naval College, the Wernher Collection in the Ranger's House, and Greenwich Market.

Most of the attractions lie within the 180-acre Greenwich Park, which is London's oldest Royal Park with some of the best panoramic views of London and the River Thames from its highest point. Museums are mostly free, but some museums and specific exhibitions make a charge; your price includes entrance to The Cutty Sark and Royal Observatory.

If the above does not whet your appetite, you could catch the Docklands Light Railway at the nearby Cutty Sark Station and visit the Isle of Dogs, the Museum in Docklands, or Canary Wharf. And if you really want to be adventurous you can walk under the Thames in the Greenwich Foot Tunnel (1217 feet in length) to Island Gardens on the Isle of Dogs, where you can also catch the Docklands Light Railway.

The cost of the trip will be between £45 and £56 per member and 1st guest; £68 for 2nd guests. This cost includes coach and boat services, lunch(see below) and entrance to Cutty Sark and Royal Observatory. Numbers are limited so it is advised to book early. I will provide a more detailed information pack before the trip so that you can plan your day.

Should anyone wish to make their own lunch arrangements then a reduction of £8 per person price will be available. Please indicate on booking form if you wish to take up this option.

The Royal Air Force Cosford’s 75th Anniversary Air Show 2013. Sunday June 9 (Organiser Phil Dalton)

Cosford 75th Anniversary

The 2013 Air Show brings together a wide variety of aircraft including the Royal Air Force, aerobatic displays, vintage aircraft and many more. With so many new things to see and do, you can be sure there is something to entertain the whole family. Enjoy expanded interactive aircraft and military displays, arena demonstrations, visit the fair ground, shop for craft and memorabilia or visit the RAF museum where entry is included. In 2013 the show will celebrate three important Anniversaries: The 75th Anniversary of Royal Air Force Cosford, the 75th Anniversary of the Spitfire entering RAF service and 40 years of RAF service from the Jaguar jet aircraft.

All profits from the RAF Cosford Air Show are donated to local and service charities in support of our military personnel and their families.

In addition, for those members/1st Guests travelling to Cosford by train, 1/3 of the return ticket price, maximum £4, will be refunded upon submission of the ticket to the organizer after the event.

Summer Luncheon — Wednesday 12th June 2013 at 12.30 for 1.00 lunch (Organiser Carole Robertson)

This year we are returning to the Terrace Suite at the “Pudding Club” at 3 Ways House Hotel, Mickleton for our Summer luncheon and, as always, the menu looks very inviting.

The cost for this three-course meal and a welcome drink is £21.00 per head. Second guests £33.00 per head. To meet the request of members and to acknowledge the cut we have had in our grant, any wine is to be selected and paid for by the individual.

Upton Jazz Festival Saturday June 29th (Organiser David Dagley)

Upton Jazz Festival

Upton Jazz Festival this year will be held in the actual town; June 28th - June 30th; we will provide tickets for the Saturday and it will be a ‘do it yourself’ day.

Reduced price tickets available up to May 1st, Full price tickets after that date.

Cost before May 1st: £20. Cost after May 1st: £25. (club members)

Full price: £30 or £35 for guests.

This year the events will be held in venues throughout the town; no information is yet available as to which band is playing where. A list of the venues can be found here.

Checking with the event organisers, I’ve been told that information about ‘who’s playing where’ won’t be available untill June 1st (when the actual programme goes on sale). I’ll let you know as soon after that when I get the programme (although you are encouraged nevertheless to purchase a programme for yourselves on the day..in support of the event). A list of bands can be found here.

Although no formal lunch has been planned anyone interested in meeting up for a casual drink then I suggest The White Lion - I’ll be there (crowds permitting!) around 1.30pm.

The picturesque and charming resort of Sidmouth located on the world heritage “Jurassic Coast” nestles between majestic red cliffs whilst the resort itself is famed for its wealth of fine architecture including splendid Georgian and Regency examples. This is surely one of the most relaxing and elegant resorts around.

Our trip starts on Thursday 11th July 2013, returning on Monday 15th July, we will be staying for 4 nights dinner (4 course table d’hôtel menu), bed and English Breakfast, at the Royal York &Faulkner Hotel. This is a magnificent Regency building, enjoying an unrivalled position on Sidmouth's Esplanade, directly overlooking the sea and adjacent to the picturesque town centre.

Dating from 1810 the hotel has undergone extensive and thoroughly careful refurbishment, encompassing beautifully appointed public areas and excellent amenities that include indoor spa and leisure facilities. This hotel has remained in the same family for over 70 years and has an excellent reputation in Sidmouth and ideally placed for our tour.

The cost is expected to be £345 per member and 1st guest, second guest price will be £430, and these are based on our best estimates of the IBM Club’s subsidy, which is yet to be announced.

Coach Trip to the Tatton Park RHS Flower Show - Thursday 25 July 2013 (Organiser Barry Wiggins)

Tatton Park RHS Flower Show

Founded in 1999 as the “Chelsea of the North”, the show is held in the grounds of the National Trust estate The North’s greatest garden party has lots of fresh ideas for visitors who enjoy growing their own fruit and veg. See them at the Great British Allotment area, or if ornamental plants are more your thing, head to the Floral Marquee to find a huge choice from some of the UK’s top nurseries.

Tatton Park Flower Show is well known for its competitions and innovations in gardens and design.

Don’t miss our Galaxy Gardens, which look set to create some fascinating show gardens designs.

The cost of this excellent day out will be in the range £25.00 to £35.00 for members and first guests, depending on final numbers. Further guests will be £43.00. Westonbirt The National Arboretum - Wednesday 16th October 2013 (Organiser Carole Robertson)

Who would be interested in a day trip to Westonbirt? The National Arboretum, in the south Cotswolds, is one of the most magical and important tree gardens in the world. There are 17 miles of paths to explore, 16,000 trees and shrubs - some of the oldest, rarest and largest of their kind in the UK. A coach from IBM Warwick will take you to Tetbury with a professional guide for a walk around this National treasure. If enough members express interest, I am happy to book a coach from IBM Warwick to Tetbury plus book a guide for our visit.

Coach trip and day out at Abbey-Cwm Hir (‘A palace in Radnorshire’) on Wednesday November 20th 2013 (Organiser Peter Barnes)

Abbey-Cwm Hir at Christmas

The owners have spent significant time and energy in creating a magnificent Christmas collection. The owner Victoria Humpherson has made the statement that this is the only property in the UK to have all 52 rooms decorated with Christmas trees and to individual themes; for example, 2011 had a Victorian theme and 2012 had a Gothic theme.

The coach will leave IBM Warwick at 8am, with a comfort stop in Leominster and stopping for a sumptuous lunch at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells. We are then taken to Abbey-Cwm-Hir, where we will all be expected to take off our shoes to protect the carpets and flooring, so you will need to take your slippers with you.

After the tour we will increase the tension by holding a “best decorated slipper” competion complete with prizes being given to the two couples with the best decorated slippers in the opinions of the judges (my wife and myself).

We will then be offered coffee or tea and a mince pie before we begin our journey home with a planned arrival in Warwick at about 8pm.

For planning purposes, the cost will be approximately £40 per member and first guest, depending upon numbers attending. The price for additional guests is estimated to be £47.

The meal at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells will be a delicious two course meal, with Christmas crackers and your choices from those shown below:

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group (founded by Harry Green)

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC “techie” topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography. So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.
