This is my first Newsletter as Editor - many thanks to Brian Wilson for doing the job so well for the last ten years.  Brian will be a hard act to follow, but I will do my best.

We have a vacancy for Club Secretary - after ten happy years Carole Robertson has decided it is time for someone else to take on this role and will be stepping down at the next AGM in March 2013. For more information on this “fun” task contact Carole via carole.robertson@talktalk.net.

Spring Lunch with Speaker from Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance - 24th February 2013 (Organiser Brian Wilson)

We are continuing the 'Helicopter' theme this year with a guest speaker from Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Service. This promises to be a most interesting and informative talk; the setting will be Kenilworth Golf Club at 12:30 for 1:15.

The post code of Kenilworth Golf Club is CV8 2EA - for anyone unsure of how to get there I will provide directions nearer the time. Please send me your booking forms by 31st January so that I can finalise arrangements with the Golf Club.

The price for this event, including lunch with welcome drink and wine, will be £19 for member/first guest. We may be able to accommodate second guests at £30 each but I will waitlist them initially.

Sidmouth — Thursday 11th to Monday 15th July 2013 (Organisers Tony Mancell & Simon Barratt)

The picturesque and charming resort of Sidmouth located on the world heritage “Jurassic Coast” nestles between majestic red cliffs whilst the resort itself is famed for its wealth of fine architecture including splendid Georgian and Regency examples. This is surely one of the most relaxing and elegant resorts around.

Our trip starts on Thursday 11th July 2013, returning on Monday 15th July, we will be staying for 4 nights dinner (4 course table d’hôtel menu), bed and English Breakfast, at the Royal York &Faulkner Hotel. This is a magnificent Regency building, enjoying an unrivalled position on Sidmouth's Esplanade, directly overlooking the sea and adjacent to the picturesque town centre.

Dating from 1810 the hotel has undergone extensive and thoroughly careful refurbishment, encompassing beautifully appointed public areas and excellent amenities that include indoor spa and leisure facilities. This hotel has remained in the same family for over 70 years and has an excellent reputation in Sidmouth and ideally placed for our tour.

The cost is expected to be £345 per member and 1st guest, second guest price will be £430, and these are based on our best estimates of the IBM Club’s subsidy, which is yet to be announced.

Second call — Paris, Versailles and Monet’s Garden - Friday 20th to Tuesday 24th September 2013 (inclusive) (Organiser Dave Compton)

There are still some places left on this trip which is open to members and first guests. There are also likely to be places for second guests. Preliminary details were published in the December Newsletter. Due to a number of trade events in the Paris area, we need to get hotel rooms booked for this trip as soon as possible. We are asking, therefore, for expressions of interest backed by a £50 per person deposit.

If you require insurance, please also add £35 pp at this stage. In the unlikely event of there being insufficient interest to make the trip viable, these deposits will be returned. Full costs will be in the region of £400-450 per person for member and first guest. Second guest at approximately £500-550 per person, plus insurance where required.

Slimbridge Wetland Centre — Mid-March (Organiser Tony Mancell)

This provisional announcement is to size the interest for this trip as outlined below.

A coach from Warwick to Slimbridge Wetland Centre, Gloucestershire and return.

A private guided walk, with a knowledgeable volunteer to help us discover the grounds of the Slimbridge Wetland Centre and its many residents (the walk lasts roughly 1 hour).

Lunch in the restaurant, followed by free time to explore on your own, to see the young birds as they learn to walk and swim. Watch the mad March hares and listen out for the orchestra of bird songs.

Leaving Slimbridge late afternoon to arrive back at IBM Warwick for early evening.

The cost for members will be around £35.00 per head.

If you are interested in this day out, please let me know ASAP, so I can finalise the bookings for the coach, Slimbridge etc.

A note for your diary — Summer Luncheon — Wednesday 12th June 2013

This year we are returning to the Terrace Suite at the “Pudding Club”, Mickleton for our Summer luncheon and, as always, the menu looks very inviting.

I will be publishing this menu again with a booking form nearer the time but get your diaries out and reserve this date.

Abbey-Cwm-Hir (‘A palace in Radnorshire’) — 20th November 2013 (Organiser Peter Barnes)

Over the last few years thousands of people have toured the Hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir a grade 11 Gothic mansion some 7 miles north of Llandrindod Wales in Mid Wales such is its uniqueness the hall has featured in 10 TV programmes in the last 5 years.

The owners have restored the property over the last ten years and it combines stunning architecture, beautiful gardens and fascinating collections.

The owners have spent significant time and energy in creating a magnificent Christmas collection. The owner Victoria Humpherson has made the statement that this is the only property in the UK to have all 52 rooms decorated with Christmas trees and to individual themes for example 2011 had a Victorian theme and 2012 had a Gothic theme. Each year their Christmas begins in November and continues to the end of the first week in January, (hence the date of the trip)

The coach will leave IBM Warwick at 8am, taking a comfort stop in Leominster and stopping for a sumptuous lunch at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells. We are then taken to Abbey-Cwm-Hir, where we will all be expected to take off our shoes to protect the carpets and flooring, so you will need to take your slippers with you. We might consider awarding a prize for the best decorated slippers??

We will then be offered coffee or tea and a mince pie before we begin our journey home with a planned arrival in Warwick at about 8pm.

For planning purposes, the cost will be approximately £40 per person.

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC “techie” topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography. So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.
