March 2021 Newsletter

See below for details of this year’s AGM. Robert Tickell, who is our Retiree MND (Member Norminated Director of IBM UK's Pensions Trustee) will be talking on a subject of great interest to all of us - our pensions - so please join us for what promises to be an informative meeting.

We are hoping to run our first post-lockdown event in August. See below for details of the proposed Summer Lunch and Cruise.

Time to get your cameras and smart phones out again and enter our Spring Photo competition. We are looking for the best Spring Theme picture taken between now and the end of April 2021. There will be a prize for the best photo and a display of the best pictures will be included in our May newsletter. You may submit multiple pictures, but only the last picture submitted will be entered into the competition. All pictures entered will be saved in Dropbox and may be viewed using this link. See below for details.

The next meeting of the IBM Tech Club will be on Friday 19th of March; Paul Gover will talk about laptop security and in particular about directory encryption. John Rickman will be talking about programming in Python.

E2108SLA: Summer Launch, Wednesday 18th August Organiser: Paul Gover

Thames Cruise

Celebrate the summer with the Retirees on a cruise up and down the Thames in one of Salter’s Steamers of Oxford’s river launches. Like the very successful similar evening trip from Oxford in 2018, but this time a daytime trip starting from Abingdon, with parking within easy walking distance of the boat. Salters boats are large, with plenty of space to walk around and mingle, including lots of cover in case of rain, and seats in the downstairs saloon.

The trip starts from Salter’s jetty at Abingdon at noon on Wednesday 18th August and lasts for 5 hours. (Map). Parking is £4.70 all day (free with a blue badge) at Hales Meadow and Rye Farm pay & display car parks (cash, card or phone).

You’ll be greeted with a glass of Prosecco, and then we’ll have the Gourmet Barbecue (which was really delicious last time), including vegetarian options, and drinks from the boat’s cash bar. (Note: last time, it really was cash, not cards.)

Price £30 to £38 per member/first guest, £50 to £70 second guests, based on 30 to 50 people.

Salter’s boats depart from Abingdon Bridge Marine (nearest postcode is OX14 3HX).
From the A34 take the turn for either Abingdon (north) or Abingdon (south) and follow the road straight into the town centre.
Upon reaching the one-way system follow the road round clockwise until you see the left turn for Bridge street (A415), which leads to Culham.

The boat can take people in manual wheelchairs, but not electric; there are 4-5 steps down from the deck to the bar and toilets. No Stiletto heels please.

(The newsletter archive contains pictures from the 2018 trip event report. Click on any thumbnail to get the full-size picture.)

Please complete and return the booking form to Paul Gover.
Please submit your booking as soon as possible, preferably by the Friday 30th April.

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group

The IBM Tech Club meets using the Zoom video conferencing platform at 11.00 on the third Friday of each month. The club is a place where you can talk to IBM folk about matters technical. For example, help or advice on buying or using computers, smart phones, touch pads; engineering, electronics, wifi, bluetooth, cryptography, bitcoin, using computers to making movies, songs or musical works, best software, streaming, the internet, photography, diy, and anything else about the modern world you would like to understand better.

Apart from the technical discussion we try to have a talk by a club member at each meeting. This depends very much on members volunteering to prepare and show something they are interested in.

At 11 o’clock on the day of the meeting click on the link below. It should take you straight into the meeting.

If you need help with Zoom contact John Rickman (rickman@argonet.co.uk) in good time before the meeting.
