Event Reports

Event Report: E2108SLA Summer lunch

The weather gods were on our side for the Thames lunch and cruise. The forecast was “Cloudy” all day, but the sun frequently broke through for the club’s first event since the AGM in March 2020, with all the intervening events cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thirty members and guests made their way to Abingdon from as far afield as Hereford and Derbyshire to join the Salters Steamers boat for the leisurely cruise and barbecue. The food was excellent, though the sweet course ran out as some people took seconds before the rest of us got there. They know who they are :-)

As the Culham lock was partly blocked, causing a traffic jam on the river in the London direction, we went up river to Oxford. We’d seen a lot of it before on the 2018 trip, but no matter, and we were busy chatting and catching up on each other’s news.

Full details of the walks can be downloaded from the website -

The website also shows the lunch menu.

Please let Ray Bradbury ( know by Thursday 9th September if you are coming on one of the walks and if you require lunch so he can book seating in the restaurant. If the weather is good we have the option of dining outside.

Those doing the shorter walks may like to start with a coffee first so that finishing times for the walks are not too different.

Please contact Terry King, for more information about the Rambling Group.

IBM Retirees Technology Group

The IBM Tech Club meets using the Zoom video conferencing platform at 11.00 on the third Friday of each month. The club is a place where you can talk to IBM folk about matters technical. For example, help or advice on buying or using computers, smart phones, touch pads; engineering, electronics, wifi, bluetooth, cryptography, bitcoin, using computers to making movies, songs or musical works, best software, streaming, the internet, photography, diy, and anything else about the modern world you would like to understand better.

Apart from the technical discussion we try to have a talk by a club member at each meeting. This depends very much on members volunteering to prepare and show something they are interested in.

At 11 o’clock on the day of the meeting click on the link below. It should take you straight into the meeting.

If you need help with Zoom contact John Rickman ( in good time before the meeting.

Members’ Notices

We all know Midlands Retirees who are undertaking a range of activities to raise money for good causes. The Committee have therefore decided to offer this space to advertise such initiatives and other events which may be of interest.

BANK HOLIDAY TEAS at Burton Dassett.

Teas will be served in All Saints’, Burton Dassett on Bank Holiday Monday August 30 from 1pm - 5pm. Plenty of home-made cakes have been promised by Friends of the church, including gluten free. Unfortunately the new toilets, for which fund raising has been going on for several years, are not quite complete, but the evidence is there for all to see. Sad to say that like many churches nationwide, partly due to the pandemic, the Dassett Magna churches are very short of funds so please support this wonderful, extremely old church. Your support for this would be much appreciated. Burton Dassett Church is located at the top of the hill, adjacent to the Burton Dassett Country Park, a short distance from Junction 12 of the M40; the post code is CV47 2AB.
