July 2021 Newsletter

In this newsletter we have information and the booking form for the visit to Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre in October as well as preliminary information for the Christmas Lunch.

We now have 30 people for the Summer launch trip up the Thames from Abingdon. As that’s a break-point in the launch hire cost, bookings for this event are now closed; if you have not booked, you can still join the wait-list.

As a reminder, we have arranged another visit to Pete’s Place in August. This is a great day out for all and a great way to entertain the grandchildren for a day in the summer holidays! See the May newsletter for details.

E2110BAT: Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre, Thursday 21 October Organiser: Ray Bradshaw

Batsford Arboretum and Garden Centre

Location: Batsford, Moreton in Marsh, Glos., GL56 9AD

This will be a self drive event starting at around 10.30 a.m. There is a large car park at this location so parking should be easy. You may wish to start with a coffee/tea at the Terrace Café before entering the arboretum. The trees should be at their best during the autumn months.

After walking around the grounds you will be ready for lunch at the Garden Terrace Café. This offers home-baked food prepared daily and an array of cakes and pastries. Choose from a selection of meat, fish or vegetarian dishes as well as sandwiches and soup.

After lunch there is the garden centre to explore and perhaps buy some plants or garden tools. There is also a gift shop to browse.

The tickets will be at the subsidised price of £5 per person and will be handed to you at the arboretum entrance by Ray or Christine.

Please reserve your place for this event by completing the booking form via the link below. We do not require any payment at present.

Please complete the attached booking form and return it to Organiser as soon as possible.

E2112XML: Christmas Lunch, Thursday 16 December Organiser: Gary Wooding

Now that it appears we are just about out of lockdown, I am pleased to announce that we are planning a Christmas Lunch at Hockley House, 8640 Stratford Road, Hockley Heath, B94 5NW, which used to be called The Oak Hotel. Although the name has been changed it has the same excellent chef we had at the last successful Spring Lunch.

Hockley House Hockley House

The menu has yet to be decided but there will be a welcome drink followed by a three-course meal with ½ bottle of wine per person, followed by tea or coffee etc. The subsidised price is expected to be about £25 per member and 1st guest.

IBM Retirees Technology Group

The IBM Tech Club meets using the Zoom video conferencing platform at 11.00 on the third Friday of each month. The club is a place where you can talk to IBM folk about matters technical. For example, help or advice on buying or using computers, smart phones, touch pads; engineering, electronics, wifi, bluetooth, cryptography, bitcoin, using computers to making movies, songs or musical works, best software, streaming, the internet, photography, diy, and anything else about the modern world you would like to understand better.

Apart from the technical discussion we try to have a talk by a club member at each meeting. This depends very much on members volunteering to prepare and show something they are interested in.

At 11 o’clock on the day of the meeting click on the link below. It should take you straight into the meeting.

If you need help with Zoom contact John Rickman (rickman@argonet.co.uk) in good time before the meeting.
