Midlands IBM Retirees Club - July 2023 Newsletter

Meetings of the Tech Club are taking a summer break and will resume in September.

Unfortunately, the planned visit to Batsford Arboretum on Friday 14 July had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

Annual General Meeting

Sixteen intrepid voyagers entered the wilds of Wootton Wawen for the club’s day trip on the Stratford canal. It turned out to be pretty much a rerun of last year’s, except with less sun. The intent had been to travel in the opposite direction, but it turns out that one of the two boats can’t do that trip and turn round in a single day, and the other could only do so with a team of well-oiled locksmiths (I think that’s what I mean) to ensure we wouldn’t be held up at the 8 locks there and back.

Everybody seemed well pleased with the day out.

E2306CFS GWSR Steam railway trip, Tuesday 5 September Organiser: Paul Gover

The GWSR steam railway trip, mentioned as possible back in the June, and originally announced back in the February newsletter, is definitely happening now, but on a different date. It is now a pub lunch followed by an afternoon rail trip, instead of a fish and chip supper on the train in the evening.

I let people who booked on the original fish and chip supper trip know of the revised trip by email, and over twenty of them have re-booked for the new one. (They need not respond again to this announcement.)

I’ve kept the same event number, despite the change of month. Note that as the event is now about a month away, if you want to come, please send your booking form and deposit as soon as possible.

Instead of fish and chips on the train, we’ll have lunch at the Flag and Whistle pub at Toddington Station.

The lunch will be followed by a group trip at 14:31 on the GWSR from there to Cheltenham Racecourse and back.

The pub’s menu for sit-down meals is limited: Roast Chicken and Veg and Potatoes, Quiche New Potatoes and Salad, or Vegetable Tagine, for £12.50 per person, not including drinks.

Cost will be £15.30 for the return trip, or if you’re keen, you can get a Day Rover ticket for £22.50 which allows you as many trips (realistically 2 returns, given the timetable) and/or a return trip to their Broadway station where they have a museum, and of course would cover you for the trip to Cheltenham with the group. Both prices are a 10% reduction on non-group figure.

Details of the attractions at the various GWSR stations are on their web site: www.gwsr.com/

For more details contact the organiser Paul Gover by email at pmw.gover@yahoo.co.uk

Please complete the attached booking form and send it to Paul Gover as soon as possible, and by Sunday 13th August at the latest.

IBM Retirees Technology Group

The IBM Tech Club meets using the Zoom video conferencing platform at 11.00 on the third Friday of each month. The club is a place where you can talk to IBM folk about matters technical. For example, help or advice on buying or using computers, smart phones, touch pads; engineering, electronics, wifi, bluetooth, cryptography, bitcoin, using computers to making movies, songs or musical works, best software, streaming, the internet, photography, diy, and anything else about the modern world you would like to understand better.

Apart from the technical discussion we try to have a talk by a club member at each meeting. This depends very much on members volunteering to prepare and show something they are interested in.

At 11 o’clock on the day of the meeting click on the link below. It should take you straight into the meeting.
