Midlands IBM Retirees Club - March 2023 Newsletter

This newsletter has the information and booking form for this year’s Spring lunch at the Baraset Barn on Wednesday 26 April. There is also information about a canal trip in self drive day boats.

At the April meeting of the Tech Club Charles Barnwell will be talking about his experiences travelling with an electric vehicle overseas. The March meeting was an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI); future meetings will look into this topic in more depth. More information about these meetings and an example of the capabilities of AI can be seen in the contents of this email sent regarding the March meeting. See below for more information about the Tech Club.

Details of the walk on Wednesday 29th March can be found using these links:

Bookings for the GWSR Cheltenham Fryer — Fish and Chip Special are now closed. We had 20 members planning to attend. Sadly, the GWSR have advised us that all the Cheltenham Fryer trips this year are fully booked, so the event will not take place on 24th June as advertised. They also say they might organise some more Fryer trips later this year, so we are asking the members booked on the previous event if they wish to cancel and get their deposit back, or wait and see if we can book for another date.

E2304LUN: Spring lunch at The Baraset Barn, Wednesday 26 April at 12:00 Organiser: Ray Bradshaw

Baraset Barn

The club has reserved a dining area for up to 26 people in the main restaurant. The restaurant address is
Pimlico Lane, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 7RJ

We will meet in the reception area at around 12 noon for drinks before sitting down in the restaurant for lunch at between 12.15 and 12.30.

In view of the numbers and to help them serve food to us at the same time they need us to pre-order our food choices from their Spring Menu. The Menu is available on their website: www.barasetbarn.co.uk

To book places could you please complete and return a booking form either by email or post by 18 April. Details of where to send this are shown on the booking form.

E2308CNL: Canal day Organiser: Paul Gover

We plan to repeat last year’s hire of a couple of “day boats” from Anglo Welsh narrow boats in Wootton Wawen in August. This time we plan to go in the opposite direction along the canal, which means operating a number of locks, turning round, and returning through the locks back to base.

As before, we will be limited to 20 people, and the price should be £10 per person. It will be a self-catering picnic, though we will provide milk, instant coffee and sugar. Parking will again be restricted, so car sharing is recommended.

IBM Retirees Technology Group

The IBM Tech Club meets using the Zoom video conferencing platform at 11.00 on the third Friday of each month. The club is a place where you can talk to IBM folk about matters technical. For example, help or advice on buying or using computers, smart phones, touch pads; engineering, electronics, wifi, bluetooth, cryptography, bitcoin, using computers to making movies, songs or musical works, best software, streaming, the internet, photography, diy, and anything else about the modern world you would like to understand better.

Apart from the technical discussion we try to have a talk by a club member at each meeting. This depends very much on members volunteering to prepare and show something they are interested in.

At 11 o’clock on the day of the meeting click on the link below. It should take you straight into the meeting.

If you need help with Zoom contact John Rickman (rickman@argonet.co.uk) in good time before the meeting.
