Report of Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM)
Monday 13th November 2017 at the Royal British Legion, Knowle

The meeting was attended by 33 members and 14 non-members and was kicked off at 10:15am by Alan Bridgman. The one topic for the EGM was “The Future of the IBM Midlands Retirees Club”.

Background to the EGM

The IBM Midlands Retirees Club has been in existence for 25-30 years and in that time members and their guests have benefitted from the several hundred events that the Club Committee has organised and the subsidy provided by IBM. But all good things must come to an end (or so they say!) and the Committee felt that the Club is experiencing a range of problems that need immediate attention:-

IBM Midlands Retirees Club Constitution

The Club’s Constitution specifies the objectives of the Club, its management by a Committee, the mechanics of IBM’s grant distribution, the regular and exceptional meetings that must be held and the rules for closing down the Club. Alan Bridgman expanded on the sections on Extraordinary General Meetings and the Dissolution of a Club:-

Possible Outcomes of the EGM

There are two obvious possible outcomes of the EGM:-

  1. Continue with the IBM Midlands Retirees Club, but we will need
    1. Volunteers for 9-12 Committee members, and
    2. Specific nominations for a new Chairman and Treasurer
  2. Close the present IBM Midlands Retirees Club completely
    1. As a consequence of which it would be possible to form a new non-IBM type of Club

There was an active period of discussion, in which several suggestions were proposed:-

It was decided to ask the audience how many people would be willing to volunteer to be members of the Club’s Committee. Eleven IBM members put their names forward. This group of people then had a separate discussion. At the end of the meeting it was agreed that the group of eleven should join the next Club’s Committee meeting on Monday 4th December.

Event Reports

Skittles - 14th November 2017

Skittles, once again back at Snitterfield last month, was enjoyed by 23 people. Unfortunately the professionals were below par and no ‘strikes’ were forthcoming. Nevertheless an enjoyable social evening for one and all, with a fairly generous and satisfying buffet provided by the club. Judging by my emails an enjoyable evening for one and all.

Ramble - Hidcote and Ilmington - 15th November 2017

This walk, organised by Rick Paslawski, was interesting and varied. It was just under 9 miles and finished at the Howard Arms, which was just a great pub to finish at. You can see a few photos taken by Richard Short on the Club’s Dropbox page

Sub-Groups of Retirees Club and Employee Club

IBM Retirees Rambling Group

The IBM (Warwick) Rambling Club is now a subsection of the IBM Midlands Retiree Club. Any member of the Midlands Retiree club is welcome to join our subsection. Our subs are £5 per person per year. Our programme consists of a meal in late February, a monthly ramble with a pub lunch using own transport and an AGM in December. We also share a 3-4 day trip using coach transport with retiree sightseers in May.

Any retiree who would like to give us a try, can come along on one of our monthly walks without needing to join. Meal subsidies are available only to members and not for those joining us on a trial basis.

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group (founded by Harry Green)

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC “techie” topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography. So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.

Members’ Notices

We all know Midlands Retirees who are undertaking a range of activities to raise money for good causes. The Committee have therefore decided to offer this space to advertise such initiatives and other events which may be of interest.
