Event Report: E1913BTH Visit To Bath, Thursday 26th September

The coach left IBM Warwick with 23 people and after arriving in Bath we had some free time for lunch and sightseeing. The weather was clear and sunny and in the afternoon we had a guided walking tour of Bath, one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Cities in Europe, the other is Venice. We had two guides from the “The Mayor of Bath’s Corps of Honorary Guides” who provide their services free of charge, as their web site says “The reward is the satisfaction of welcoming visitors from across the world and, on behalf of the Mayor, leading informative, interesting and entertaining walking tours of the beautiful and historic City of Bath.”

The guides were both excellent, and the two hour tour was definitely, informative, interesting and entertaining, covering the history of the hot springs, the growth of the city, and the architecture. There were also many stories of the life and characters in Bath in the 18th and 19th Century, when it was the first tourist destination in the UK, and hosted everyone from the Royal Family, the nobility, politicians, landed gentry, and the associated followers and ‘people on the make’.

One unexpected aspect of the tour was actually to be taken back to Bath in the 18th Century, as you can see in the photos below, although this may have had something to do with Netflix filming Bridgerton!

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group (founded by Harry Green)

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC “techie” topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography. So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.
