September 2018 Newsletter

This month we have the announcements and booking forms for a Day at the Races at Silverstone on Saturday 20th October and the annual Skittles Evening on Thursday 8th November.

There are still places available for the Christmas Lunch at Wroxall Abbey on Thursday 13th December but please get your bookings in to Alan Bridgman as soon as possible.

The request for interest for the Motoring Tour caused an overwhelming burst of apathy - just one email! It almost certainly will not go ahead. If you were interested but didn’t get around to responding, please do so; if you might have been interested but there was a problem with the specific tours described, please let Paul Gover know, as we can change them.

It’s rather short notice, but members may also be interested in the Member’s Notice from Dave Compton about an Auction Insight Evening with Locke & England in Leamington on Tuesday 25th September in aid of the Burton Dassett Toilets & Taps project.

Historic Sports Car Club Championship

On Saturday/Sunday 20th-21st October, Silverstone race circuit host the Historic Sports Car Club Championship. This is a chance to experience motor racing at a really low price, with lots of action.

Unlike the big-ticket events such as F1 or MotoGP or the BTCC, you can wander round the paddock, sit anywhere in the stands (not all of them are open, but there are no reserved seat), and usually talk to the friendly participants (it’s best not to trouble them if they’re trying to repair their pride and joy after a shunt).

See the Silverstone circuit web site for details, including disabled access:
www.silverstone.co.uk/events/historic-sports-car-club-championship-finals
and for more details, the HSCC web site:
hscc.org.uk/event/silverstone-finals-2

You may want to bring ear defenders. The Tannoy system broadcasts race commentary, but you might bring an AM radio with closed-back headphones if you don’t want to miss anything.

I’ve chosen the Saturday, as the drivers tend to leave earlier on Sunday.

Normal ticket price £10; Member and 1st Guest club price £5 for the first 30 tickets. This is a massive saving on the £15 on-the-gate price.
If you’re really keen, we’ll do the two-day weekend ticket for £7.50 member/1st Guest.
Children under 16 get free entry, but do need a ticket.

No dogs. No glass bottles. No drones. No BBQs.

A selection of the usual Silverstone catering vans will be available, or bring a picnic. The Silversone bar might be open (currently “TBC”).

Please complete the attached booking form and return it to Paul Gover as soon as possible.

E1810SKI: Skittles Evening, Thursday 8th November 2018 Organiser: David Dagley

Our usual and popular skittles evening has been arranged to take place at Snitterfield Sports Club for the evening of Thursday 8th November 2018. This will be the usual ‘self drive’ event with a 19:00 meet and a 19.30 start time. A hot buffet will be provided that should suit both carnivores and vegetarians together with prizes for the evening’s winners.

Access to the skittle alley limits us to twenty six participants. Ladies should not bowl in high heels.

Price for members and 1st guest: £4 pp. Other guests (if available): £15 pp.

Please complete the attached booking form and return it to David Dagley as soon as possible.

Sub-Groups of Retirees Club and Employee Club

IBM Retirees Rambling Group

The IBM (Warwick) Rambling Club is now a subsection of the IBM Midlands Retiree Club. Any member of the Midlands Retiree club is welcome to join our subsection. Our subs are £5 per person per year. Our programme consists of a meal in late February, a monthly ramble with a pub lunch using own transport and an AGM in December. In the past we have shared a trip using coach transport with retiree sightseers in May or June - this year there will be a trip to the Isle of Wight 24-28 June.

Any retiree who would like to give us a try, can come along on one of our monthly walks without needing to join. Meal subsidies are available only to members and not for those joining us on a trial basis.

Go to a list of the planned walks for 2018 and other information.

For more information, please contact Terry King, terryaking@hotmail.com.

IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group (founded by Harry Green)

The IBM Retirees PC and Technology Group meets every alternate month for a lively discussion on PC and technology topics in the digital age. There are usually one or two specific presentations given by members or by outside speakers, which the members of the Group have requested. We try to provide a reasonable balance between PC “techie” topics, new technology, and topics of a more general nature such as digital television, Internet telephony and digital photography. So whether you are a newcomer to the PC or a more experienced user, we hope you will find something of interest. You are very welcome to join us.

Members’ Notices

We all know Midlands Retirees who are undertaking a range of activities to raise money for good causes. The Committee have therefore decided to offer this space to advertise such initiatives and other events which may be of interest.

Dave Compton - Auction Insight Evening - Tuesday 25th September

The evening starts with refreshments on arrival with a choice of wine or fruit juice, and a very brief introduction to Locke & England. This is followed by a light-hearted tour around the saleroom, inspecting the lots on view from the forthcoming selected antiques and collectors’ items sale.

Guests will be asked to give their opinion of value on a range of items from antique furniture, paintings, silverware and ceramics and many other interesting items. There will be a prize for the winner with the most points.

Cheese & biscuits and drinks will be served whilst the answers are being marked and scores given.

This will then be followed by a short question and answer session with the Locke & England team.

The evening commences at 6.15 for 6.30 p.m. and will run for no more than 2 hours and will take place at the Locke & England salerooms situated at 12 Guy Street, Leamington Spa, CV32 4RT. The cost is just £10 per person and all proceed will go to the Burton Dassett Toilets & Taps project to raise money for the provision of much needed catering and toilet facilities at the church.

For further details or to book your place please contact Bridget Norton on 07748 981995 or email cbsnorton@gmail.com.
